Schitul Sfântul Efrem cel Nou

Schitul Sfântul Efrem cel Nou is an Orthodox monastic settlement located in the village of Cristian, Brașov County, at coordinates 45.6277° N, 25.5111° E, near the city of Brașov, approximately 8 km from the city centre. The skete is dedicated to Sfântul Efrem cel Nou, a Greek martyr of the 15th century, canonised by the Orthodox Church and venerated for the numerous miracles attributed to his relics. The settlement belongs to the category of small-scale sketes typical of the Transylvania region, where the presence of Orthodox monasteries held particular spiritual and identity-related significance for the Romanian population during the periods of Habsburg and Austro-Hungarian rule. The village of Cristian, where the skete is located, is one of the localities with a long-standing tradition in Brașov County, documented as far back as the 13th century, when it was initially a Saxon settlement. Access from the city of Brașov is straightforward, via county road DJ103A, which connects Brașov to Cristian, a locality also reachable by public transport. The area lies at the foot of the Munții Perșani, at an altitude of approximately 520 m, within the geographical setting characteristic of the Depresiunea Brașovului. The skete is worth visiting for its Orthodox religious significance within the context of Transylvania, for the architecture typical of small monastic establishments, and for the importance of the cult of Sfântul Efrem cel Nou in contemporary Romanian Orthodox spirituality.
