Poiana Mărului Monastery
Poiana Mărului Monastery, in Buzău County at about 600 m altitude, was founded in 1730 by Elder Vasile, with the support of ruler Nicolae Mavrocordat, and is a monastic center with a documented Hesychast tradition, linked to the spiritual movement of Saint Paisius Velichkovsky. The complex includes three places of worship — the churches of the "Nativity of the Mother of God" and "All Saints," plus the "Holy Prophet Elijah" chapel (1994) — and a heritage of 18th-century icons and religious objects. It is reached via county road DJ203G, through Tisău and Leiculești, about 60 km from the city of Buzău.

Poiana Mărului Monastery is an Orthodox monastic complex located in the village of Poiana Mărului, Buzău County, at an altitude of about 600 m, in the contact zone between the Curvature Subcarpathians and the first ridges of the Buzău Mountains. The monastery was founded in 1730 by Elder Vasile, with financial support from ruler Nicolae Mavrocordat of Wallachia (reigns: January-November 1716; 1719-1730).
Saint Vasile of Poiana Mărului was the central figure of a broad spiritual renewal movement in the 18th century, notable for practicing the Jesus Prayer (Hesychasm) and for copying and passing down numerous Philokalic writings. The monastery served as an important center of Orthodox spirituality, with documented connections to Athonite Hesychast currents, through its direct link to Saint Paisius Velichkovsky, considered his spiritual disciple, who would later spread these practices throughout the Eastern European Orthodox world.
The monastic complex includes three places of worship: the main church, dedicated to the "Nativity of the Mother of God," the "All Saints" church, and the chapel dedicated to the "Holy Prophet Elijah," built in 1994. The older churches retain architectural elements influenced by Brâncovenesc style, along with monastic cells and administrative buildings built or restored in several stages, the most recent major restoration dating from recent decades. The monastery's heritage includes old icons, manuscripts, and religious objects reflecting the evolution of Romanian religious art from the 18th century to the present.
The monastery's feast days are celebrated on 25 April (Saint Elder Vasile of Poiana Mărului) and 8 September (Nativity of the Mother of God). It is reached via county road DJ203G, from the city of Buzău through Tisău and Leiculești, or from Măgura commune, via national road DN10 (Buzău-Brașov). The distance from the city of Buzău is about 60 km, with the road passable by vehicle year-round. Poiana Mărului Monastery is worth visiting for its well-documented historical value, its architecture representative of Brâncovenesc style, and its significance for understanding the spiritual monastic movements of 18th-century Romania.
