Bixad Monastery

The Monastery of Saint Simeon the Stylite in Bixad is an Orthodox monastic complex situated in the village of Bixad, Satu Mare County, near the border with Ukraine, at coordinates 47.934806, 23.38906. Located in the basin area of Oaș, the monastery bears the dedication of Saint Simeon the Stylite, a Syrian ascetic of the 5th century (390–459 AD), known for his ascetic practice of living on a column. The monastic complex belongs to the Orthodox Diocese of Maramureș and Sătmar and represents one of the centres of monastic life in northern Romania. The Bixad area is documented from the medieval period, and the presence of monasticism in this region reflects the strong Orthodox traditions of the communities of Țara Oașului. The village of Bixad is located approximately 18 km north-west of Negrești-Oaș, the main urban centre of the area, and around 65 km north of the city of Satu Mare. Access is via county road DJ109F, which connects the localities within Depresiunea Oașului. From Satu Mare, the road route follows DN19 towards Negrești-Oaș, from where the journey continues to Bixad. The area benefits from a natural setting characteristic of the Munții Oaș, with hilly terrain and deciduous forests. The monastery is worth visiting to understand the continuity of Orthodox monastic traditions in northern Transylvania and for its cultural context specific to the ethnographic region of Țara Oașului.
