Lacul Vulturilor

Lacul Vulturilor, also known as "Lacul fără Fund" ("The Bottomless Lake"), is a glacial lake situated in the Munții Siriu, part of the Carpații de Curbură, on the eastern slope of Culmea Mălâia, at an altitude of approximately 1,420 m. It lies within the commune of Chiojdu, Buzău County, in a small mountain depression dominated by the peaks of Mălâia and Bocârnea. The lake covers an area of approximately 0.9 hectares, has a length of around 130 metres, and a relatively shallow maximum depth of just a few metres, despite the name suggesting otherwise. The body of water began forming during the Pleistocene, through the melting of a glacier approximately 1.5 km long, and is currently fed by precipitation, snowmelt from the surrounding slopes, and nearby springs. Lacul Vulturilor is of notable geographical significance, being considered the only glacial lake in the Carpathians along a stretch of approximately 500 km of ridge between the Munții Călimani and the Masivul Făgăraș. The surrounding area features alpine relief, with rocky escarpments, scree slopes, and mountain meadows, and provides habitat for protected species, including the chamois. The lake's name derives from a legend recorded by the writer Alexandru Vlahuță in "România pitorească", according to which eagles would descend in spring to drink from the lake in order to regain their youth. Together with the Vulcanii Noroioși and the salt karst at Meledic, the site ranks among the principal natural attractions of Buzău County.
