Lacul Iezerul Sadovei

Lacul Iezerul Sadovei (Lacul Iezer din Sadova) is a natural barrier lake situated in Suceava County, in the Obcinele Bucovinei area, near the village of Sadova and not far from Masivul Rarău, with its spectacular Pietrele Doamnei. Unlike the glacial lakes found in the high mountains, Iezerul Sadovei was formed through a landslide process that dammed the course of a stream — a mechanism similar to the one that gave rise to the much better-known Lac Roșu in Harghita County, with which it is often compared. The appearance of the lake in the gentle landscape of the obcine is shrouded in mystery, as the exact date of its formation is uncertain; however, historical references from around the year 1594, during the reign of Aron Vodă, attest to its existence, meaning that its waters have endured for over four centuries. Like many remarkable places in Bucovina, the lake also has a legend: it is said that a treasure hidden by the Tatars lies at the bottom, guarded by vipers and the fish in the water. Set in an exceptional natural setting, surrounded by forests and the gentle meadows of the obcine, the lake is today a beloved resting point along the Via Transilvanica trail, which passes through Bucovina, and is frequented by hikers and nature lovers. Its calm waters, on which wild ducks float, and the picturesque surroundings make Iezerul Sadovei a place of relaxation and contemplation, complementing the major attractions of the area — Masivul Rarău, Pietrele Doamnei, and the monasteries of Bucovina.
