Solești Reservoir

The Solești Reservoir is an artificial lake located in Vaslui County, on the course of the Vasluieț River, a tributary of the Bârlad. It was constructed as part of the hydrotechnical development works of the Bârlad river basin, with the primary purpose of flood attenuation and securing water resources for irrigation and industrial use. The lake covers approximately 280 hectares, with a storage capacity of around 31 million cubic metres, technical data that place it in the category of reservoirs of regional importance. The dam retaining the body of water is of the embankment type, constructed from local materials. The surrounding area is characterised by the hilly relief typical of the Podișul Central Moldovenesc, with moderate elevations ranging between 150 and 300 metres. The riparian vegetation and the lake's extensive shorelines form favourable habitats for numerous species of aquatic and wetland birds, making the area a destination for ornithologists and anglers alike. The dominant species in the lake's ichthyofauna include carp, crucian carp, pike-perch, and pike. Access is available from the municipality of Vaslui via DJ 244, at a distance of approximately 15 km to the village of Solești. The site is worth visiting for its sport fishing opportunities, birdwatching, and relatively easy access from the municipality of Vaslui, while also serving as a point of reference for the study of hydrotechnical developments in the Bârlad basin.
