Rogojești Reservoir

Rogojești Lake is a reservoir located on the upper course of the Siret River, approximately 12 km from where the river enters Romanian territory, on the border between Suceava and Botoșani counties. The dam is situated downstream of the town of Siret and upstream of the village of Rogojești, within the administrative areas of Grămești commune (Suceava county) and Mihăileni commune (Botoșani county). Built from homogeneous earth using local materials, and fitted with a concrete spillway and an upstream concrete face, the dam serves several primary functions: regulating the flow of the Siret River, supplying drinking water, industrial water, and irrigation water, providing flood protection, and supplementing water flows into the downstream Bucecea reservoir. The lake's total storage volume is approximately 54 million cubic metres. Beyond its hydrotechnical role, the lake holds significant ecological importance: together with the Bucecea reservoir, it forms the Natura 2000 site and special avifaunal protection area "Acumulările Rogojești-Bucecea", a wetland comprising open water, reed beds, riverbanks, and adjacent land, which provides habitat for numerous waterfowl species, including herons, wild ducks, and cormorants. The riparian zone is covered with vegetation typical of wetland areas, and seasonal fluctuations in water levels are visible along the banks. The lake is stocked with species such as carp, pike-perch, bream, and catfish, and is particularly popular with sport fishermen and birdwatchers.
