Izbucul Tăuzului

Izbucul Tăuzului is a hydrological phenomenon of the izbuc type — an intermittent karst spring fed by an underground system of galleries and caverns carved through calcareous rock over geological time. Its mechanism is similar to that of a natural siphon: water gradually accumulates in the underground network until the pressure exceeds a critical point, at which moment an eruption occurs at the surface. The frequency and flow rate of the eruptions vary significantly depending on rainfall and the level of the underground aquifer in preceding periods. It is one of the best-known and most studied izbucuri in Romania, representing a site of scientific interest for karst geology and hydrology. The surrounding area is part of the karst region of the Munții Apuseni, one of the richest in formations of this type in the country. Access is via mountain trails from the commune of Garda de Sus, Alba County. There are no fixed visiting hours — eruptions are not predictable and cannot be announced in advance. The chances of witnessing an eruption are higher after rainy periods or during snowmelt. Estimated travel time from Garda de Sus: approximately 45–60 minutes on foot. Recommended especially for visitors with an interest in geology, speleology, and rare natural phenomena.
