The Roman Galleries of Roșia Montană
The Roman Galleries of Roșia Montană represent the most important and extensive underground mining complex from Roman antiquity, with over 7 km of galleries carved into the mountain massifs surrounding the town. The area was known in the Roman era as Alburnus Maior and was the principal gold-mining centre of the Roman Empire.

The Roman Galleries of Roșia Montană, located in the town of Roșia Montană, Alba County, form part of the most significant Roman-era underground mining complex known in the world. The area was called Alburnus Maior in Roman times and represented the most important source of gold for the Roman Empire in the province of Dacia. Mining activity in this area dates back to the Bronze Age, but reached its peak during the Roman period, between the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. The total galleries carved into the mountain massifs surrounding the town exceed 80 km, of which approximately 7 km date from the Roman era. The Roman mining works demonstrate advanced techniques for their time — sophisticated hydraulic systems for water drainage, the use of cascading waterwheels, and drilling techniques specific to Illyrian-Dalmatian migrants brought to the area specifically for the mining operations. On the gallery walls, the marks left by Roman chisels and hammers are still visible, testifying to sustained activity over many centuries. During the 18th and 19th centuries, wax-coated wooden tablets bearing Latin inscriptions were discovered in the galleries — exceptional legal documents considered among the most important epigraphic records of Roman antiquity. These tablets, together with the stone epigraphic monuments discovered in situ, provide a unique insight into the organisation of the Roman mining community. The Roman Galleries form part of the Roșia Montană Mining Cultural Landscape, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2021, under criteria (ii), (iii) and (iv) of the World Heritage Convention. They are well worth visiting for the uniqueness of their Roman mining technology and for the authentic atmosphere of these millennia-old galleries.
