The Nichita Stănescu Memorial Museum stands at Strada Nichita Stănescu no. 1 in Ploiești, in the house where the poet was born (31 March 1933) and spent his childhood and youth. It is a branch of the Prahova County Museum of History and Archaeology.
The single-storey house was built in 1926-1927 by the poet's grandfather, Hristea Stănescu, together with his two younger sons, one of whom was Nichita's father. Its plain design recalls the rural houses of the plain. The family house was recovered in 2000 and the museum opened on 13 December 2002. Before the museum opened, an exhibition dedicated to the poet, opened in 1985, was held in Hagi Prodan House.
The rooms keep furniture that belonged to the Stănescu family. On display are the poet's school desk, the upright piano he played after school, manuscripts, photographs, diplomas, family objects and books with dedications and autographs. The best-known item is the golden wreath he received in 1982 at the Struga Poetry Evenings, kept in a glass case. Every year 31 March, the poet's birthday, is marked by poetry events.
The museum is run by the Prahova County Museum of History and Archaeology under Prahova County Council and is open to visitors.
