Detunata Goală
Detunatele are the most spectacular columnar basalt formations in Romania, located in the Munții Metaliferi, on the territory of Bucium commune, Alba County. Two twin peaks — Detunata Goală (1,168 m) and Detunata Flocoasă (1,265 m) — thrust prismatic hexagonal basalt columns up to 100 m tall skyward, formed through the slow cooling of volcanic magma millions of years ago. Their name comes from the deafening, thunder-like sound produced when basalt blocks break away and fall onto the scree at their base.
Detunatele are one of Romania's most fascinating nature reserves — two volcanic peaks in the Munții Metaliferi, in the heart of the Apuseni, on the territory of Bucium commune, Alba County, approximately 13 km from Abrud and 70 km from Alba Iulia. Detunata Goală (1,168 m) is the star of the reserve — bare of vegetation on its western slope, it fully exposes the spectacle of curved and bent basalt columns, between 70 and 100 m tall, arranged like the pipes of a giant organ. The prismatic hexagonal columns are in fact magma solidified through slow, uniform cooling several million years ago — a process that generated these structures with remarkable geometric precision. Detunata Flocoasă (1,265 m), just 1.5 km away, is covered in spruce forest — more understated, yet equally impressive from a geological standpoint. The name "detunată" has a particular story: the breaking away of massive basalt blocks from the massif and their fall onto the scree below produces a deafening noise resembling thunder, which echoes far across the surrounding valleys. A sound that local people have heard for millennia and woven into legends of fairies and giants. The reserve has been visited over the years by Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph, King Ferdinand I, and King Mihai. Today, the trail starts from the centre of Bucium-Șasa commune, near the village church, and climbs through the forest to the base of the columns — an unforgettable experience for any lover of nature and geology.
