Cheile Vâlișoarei

Cheile Vâlișoarei is a spectacular geological formation located near the village of Buru, Cluj County, in the contact zone between the Munții Trascău and the Transylvanian Plain. The gorge has been carved by the Vâlișoara River, a tributary of the Arieș, into Mesozoic limestone rocks — predominantly Jurassic and Cretaceous limestone — estimated to be approximately 150–100 million years old. The gorge extends for more than 2 km in length, and its limestone walls reach heights of up to 80–100 m, displaying a variety of karst features: sinkholes, erosion niches, small caves, and rock shelters. The vegetation on the slopes includes thermophilic and calciphilic species adapted to the limestone substrate, while the fauna includes populations of chamois reintroduced into the Trascău area, cliff-dwelling birds, and bats inhabiting the rocky cavities. The area is part of the Munții Trascău natural protected area. Access is from the village of Buru, located on DJ107K, approximately 60 km east of Cluj-Napoca, along the road that follows the Vâlișoara valley. The marked trail allows visitors to traverse the gorge on foot, without specialist equipment, in approximately 1.5–2 hours. The site is worth visiting for the diversity of its well-preserved karst formations, for the opportunity to observe chamois in their natural habitat, and for its relative accessibility from the county seat.
