Cheile Turzii

Cheile Turzii is one of the most significant and best-known karst formations in Romania, located in Cluj County, approximately 6 km west of the municipality of Turda, along the Hășdate valley, in the Munții Trascăului. The gorge was formed by the erosive action of the Hășdate river on a mass of Jurassic limestone deposited approximately 150 million years ago and gradually brought to the surface through slow tectonic movements. The gorge stretches approximately 2,900 metres in length and features vertical rocky walls reaching heights of up to 300 metres, offering a karst landscape of rare wilderness, with sharp ridges, rock towers, scree slopes, arches, and numerous caves and grottoes — among them Cetățeaua Mare (Peștera lui Balica), Cetățeaua Mică, and Peștera Liliecilor — some of which bear traces of prehistoric human habitation. The reserve, declared a protected area as early as 1938 and covering an area of approximately 324 hectares, holds exceptional botanical, zoological, and geological value. It shelters over 1,000 plant species, many of them rare or endemic, including wild garlic, white carnation, yew, and rowan, alongside a diverse fauna featuring bird species of interest such as the golden eagle, as well as numerous butterfly species. The area is included in the Natura 2000 network and is crossed by a main trail running along the valley, with several footbridges over the Hășdate river. It is also one of the most popular climbing and sport climbing destinations in the country, with over 200 routes established on the limestone walls.
