Cheile Șighiștelului

Cheile Șighiștelului is a spectacular karst formation located in the south-western part of Bihor County, along the course of the Șighiștel stream, a tributary of the Crișul Negru. The gorge extends for approximately 3 km, with limestone walls reaching heights of 100–150 m, carved into Jurassic and Cretaceous limestones belonging to the Munții Codru-Moma. The geological formations date from the Upper Jurassic period, around 150 million years ago, and karst processes have shaped caves, sinkholes and karst springs along the valley over time. From a biological standpoint, the area supports vegetation typical of rupicolous habitats, including species of ferns, mosses and calciphilous plants adapted to rocky walls. The fauna includes bat populations in the adjacent caves, as well as reptile and bird species characteristic of limestone environments. The village of Șighiștel, the starting point of the trail, is located approximately 25 km from the town of Beiuș, with road access via DJ764, a partially paved road. From the edge of the village, a trail marked with a red dot traverses the entire gorge, with an estimated duration of 2–3 hours for the round trip. The area falls within the Parcul Natural Apuseni and benefits from protected status. Cheile Șighiștelului is well worth visiting for its representative geological configuration of the Bihor karst and for the diversity of rupicolous habitats concentrated along an accessible and relatively short trail.
