Cheile Ordâncușei

Cheile Ordâncușei is a nature reserve of national interest in Munții Apuseni, declared a protected area under Law no. 5 of 2000 and included within Parcul Natural Apuseni. Located on the territory of Garda de Sus commune in Alba County, the gorge extends for approximately 2.5–3 kilometres along the valley of the Ordâncușa, a tributary of the Garda Seacă. What makes this gorge truly unique is its extreme narrowness — at certain points, the vertical limestone walls close in to just 4–6 metres apart, and the concrete road running through it crosses four concrete bridges that span the entire width of the valley. The limestone walls, sculpted by water over millennia, shelter no fewer than 70 caves and grottos, most of them small, as well as a natural arch visible from the road. The most significant feature within the gorge is Peștera Poarta lui Ionele — a protected cave that serves as a habitat for several bat species and is accessible to visitors. Near the gorge lies Ghețarul de sub Zgurăști. Cheile Ordâncușei is also one of the main access routes to Ghețarul Scărișoara, the most spectacular ice cave in Romania. Lush vegetation — beech and spruce trees, ferns, and mountain wildflowers — colours the white limestone walls and creates an atmosphere of exceptional beauty, particularly in autumn. The gorge is accessed from the centre of Garda de Sus commune, via the communal road that climbs along the Garda Seacă valley.
