Cheile Dambovicioarei

Cheile Dâmbovicioarei is a spectacular geological formation located in the village of Dâmbovicioara, Argeș County, on the southern slopes of the Munții Piatra Craiului. The gorge was carved by the Dâmbovicioara River, a tributary of the Dâmbovița, over a length of approximately 3 km, with limestone walls reaching heights of up to 100 m. The limestone rocks that form the gorge are of Jurassic age and are part of the geological structure of the Munții Piatra Craiului. Cheile Dâmbovicioarei forms part of the largest gorge complex in Romania, centred on the Dâmbovița and its tributaries, which together comprise over 20 gorges with a total length of more than 30 km. The area is included within Parcul Național Piatra Craiului and the Rezervația Naturală Piatra Craiului. Near the gorge lies Peștera Dâmbovicioarei, with a total length of 555 m and a visitor trail of approximately 250 m, formed by the dissolution of Jurassic limestone by the waters of the stream. The local fauna includes chamois, brown bears, wolves, and numerous bird species characteristic of limestone habitats. The flora features species adapted to limestone substrate, including several endemic and protected species. Access is via DN73, on the Câmpulung Muscel — Zărnești route; the national road runs through the entire length of the gorge, making it accessible by car in any season. An entry fee is charged for Parcul Național Piatra Craiului.
