Cheile Corcoaiei

Cheile Corcoaiei is a limestone canyon geological formation situated near the commune of Runcu, Gorj County, within the Munții Vâlcan range of the Southern Carpathians. The gorge has been carved by the Corcoaia stream through Mesozoic calcareous rock, predominantly Jurassic and Cretaceous, with fluvio-karst erosion shaping vertical walls that exceed 100 metres in height in the narrowest sections. The total length of the gorge is approximately 2 km, with the minimum width of the valley dropping below 5 metres in the sections with the most pronounced cliffs. The area forms part of the same karst complex that includes Cheile Sohodolului and Peștera Cloșani, making it one of the most representative karst zones in Oltenia. The vegetation is typical of calcareous rupicolous habitats, with species of ferns, mosses and saxicolous plants adapted to conditions of high humidity and low light. The fauna includes species characteristic of gorge environments — rare butterflies, amphibians and cliff-dwelling birds. Access is from the commune of Runcu, located approximately 30 km north-west of Târgu Jiu, via county road DJ 664A, with the walking route following the course of the Corcoaia stream. No specialist technical equipment is required to complete the main trail. Cheile Corcoaiei is well worth visiting for the distinctive geological configuration of its limestone walls and for the opportunity to study karst formations representative of the Southern Carpathians.
