Cheile Cibului

Cheile Cibului forms a nationally protected area of mixed type, located in the central-western part of Alba County, on the administrative territory of Almașu Mare commune. The natural area covers approximately 70 hectares and lies in the south-eastern part of the Munții Metaliferi — a mountain group within Munții Apuseni, part of the Western Carpathians chain — in the Geoagiu Basin. The gorge was carved by the Cib stream, a tributary of the Geoagiu, which over time has "sawn" through two limestone ridges, Pleașa Ardeului and Pleașa Mare, forming a defile with tall rocky walls, situated downstream from the village of Cib. Cheile Cibului is part of a broader system of gorges in the area, alongside cheile Glodului, Ardeului, Madei and Băcâiei, and is included in the Natura 2000 site "Cheile Glodului, Cibului și Măzii". The limestone rocks display characteristic karst features — steep cliffs, niches and dissolution microrelief — while on the shaded, moisture-rich walls a specific rupestral vegetation has developed, adapted to these conditions. The fauna includes cliff-dwelling birds, birds of prey and other species characteristic of gorge environments, giving the area a high level of biodiversity. Along the stream there is also a small waterfall, as well as the Piatra Mijlocie rock face, which is popular among climbers. Declared a nature reserve in 1995 and reconfirmed under Law no. 5 of 2000, the area is managed as a protected zone, and visitors are encouraged to follow responsible tourism practices. As a secluded location with limited tourist infrastructure, Cheile Cibului retains a wild and authentic character. The surrounding area also offers other points of interest, including the Dacian fortress at Ardeu and the church in the hamlet of Cheile Cibului, built during the interwar period amid impressive natural surroundings, making this region a distinctive destination for nature lovers and those seeking tranquillity in Munții Apuseni.
