Ineu Medieval Fortress

Ineu Medieval Fortress is a fortified ensemble located in the town of Ineu, Arad County, on the bank of the Crișul Alb river, at an altitude of approximately 110 m. Construction dates from the 13th century, with the fortress first mentioned in documents in 1295. Throughout its history, it successively belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary, the Principality of Transylvania, and the Ottoman Empire, which occupied it in 1566 and held it until 1693, when it was recaptured by Habsburg forces. This succession of rulers brought about significant architectural transformations, and the current layout reflects interventions from multiple historical periods. The fortress has an approximately square plan with semicircular bastions at the corners, characteristic of the transitional military architecture between the medieval and Renaissance styles. The enclosure wall, which locally exceeds 2 metres in thickness, surrounds an area of approximately 1.5 hectares. Inside, the ruins of administrative and residential structures are preserved, partially consolidated following restoration works. The fortress is accessed from the centre of the town of Ineu, approximately 60 km east of Arad, via the DN79 road, which is fully paved along its entire length. The fortress is worth visiting for its value as an architectural document of the military conflicts of the 16th and 17th centuries in Central Europe and as a concrete example of the evolution of defensive construction techniques during this period.
