The Getic Fortress at Cotnari (Dealul Cătălina)

The Getic fortress at Cotnari, situated on Dealul Cătălina in the commune of Cotnari, Iași County, is a fortification dating from the Early Iron Age, built by the Thraco-Getic population of northern Moldova. Set on a promontory with steep slopes, the fortress was defended by earthen ramparts, ditches and a palisade, making it one of the most impressive Getic fortifications in the region. Archaeological research has uncovered dwellings and a rich body of material attesting to a high level of culture, fostered by contacts with the Greek world. On the same hill, older traces of habitation have also been identified, dating from the Palaeolithic and from the Eneolithic period of the Cucuteni culture.

The Getic Fortress at Cotnari (Dealul Cătălina)
The Getic fortress at Cotnari is a fortification from the Early Iron Age, located on Dealul Cătălina in the commune of Cotnari, Iași County. The fortress occupies a high promontory with steep slopes that gave it a naturally defensible position, dominating the hilly landscape of northern Moldova. The defensive system consisted of earthen ramparts, deep ditches and a palisade of wooden stakes, clearly identified by archaeologists on the south-western and south-eastern sides; by the scale of its fortification elements, the fortress represented an exceptionally strong stronghold for its period. It is believed that the fortification served as the residence of a local Thraco-Getic chieftain, whose authority extended over the communities in the surrounding open settlements, and also as a place of refuge for the population of neighbouring areas in times of conflict. Systematic archaeological excavations, carried out mainly in the years 1967–1969 and subsequently resumed using modern investigative methods, have uncovered surface dwellings, pit-houses and a rich body of archaeological material, revealing a high cultural level among the Thraco-Getic population of northern Moldova, shaped by intensive trade relations with the Greek world. On the same hill, much older traces of habitation have also been recorded, dating from the Palaeolithic, from the Eneolithic period belonging to the Cucuteni culture, and from the early Middle Ages, indicating a prolonged occupation of the site across the millennia. The fortress at Cotnari remains an important reference point for understanding Geto-Dacian civilisation in the east-Carpathian area.
