Făgăraș Citadel

Făgăraș Citadel is a medieval fortification situated in the centre of Făgăraș town, at 1 Strada Republicii, Brașov County. Construction began in 1310 on the site of an earlier wooden and earthen fortification attested from the 12th century, and continued through major extensions and consolidations until the 17th century. The citadel has a pentagonal layout, with four cylindrical corner towers and a fifth tower — the Red Tower, the oldest, built in the second half of the 14th century, with walls 3 m thick and six levels serving different functions. The complex is surrounded by a water-filled moat fed by the Olt River, approximately 15 m wide, and by walls up to 2.5 m thick, built from stone and brick. The citadel's golden age was the 17th century, when Prince Gabriel Bethlen transformed it into a Renaissance residence with the help of Italian craftsmen, adding the Throne Room, windows with elegant surrounds, and reception halls. During this period, the citadel hosted 11 assemblies of the Diet of Transylvania, and the Leopoldine Diploma — which served as Transylvania's constitution until 1848 — was accepted in the Throne Room. In 1599, Mihai Viteazul granted the citadel to his wife, Doamna Stanca, as a place of refuge and for safekeeping the treasury. During the communist period, the citadel functioned as a political prison. Today it houses the Făgăraș Land Museum "Valer Literat", with collections of archaeology, weapons, documents, icons on glass, ethnography and folk art, spread across more than 60 rooms. In 2024, the citadel was visited by over 115,000 tourists.
