The Old Town Centre - Buzău
The historic centre of Buzău municipality brings together representative civic and religious monuments from the 17th to the 20th centuries, organised along the axis connecting the Episcopal Complex to the Communal Palace. Documented as a market town as early as 1431 and having become an episcopal see around the year 1500, Buzău served as an important commercial and customs centre on the route between Țara Românească and Moldova. The city centre concentrates the architecture of several periods of urban development, from the voivodal cathedral founded by Matei Basarab to the administrative buildings erected at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
The historic centre of Buzău municipality took shape over the centuries around two major landmarks: the Episcopal Complex and the Communal Palace. The Episcopal Complex includes the voivodal Cathedral of the Dormition of the Mother of God, founded by the ruler Matei Basarab in 1649 on the site of an earlier place of worship, alongside the new Archiepiscopal Cathedral, built at the beginning of the 21st century. The Communal Palace, an emblematic historical monument of the city, was built between 1899 and 1903 to the design of architect Alexandru Săvulescu, at the initiative of mayor Nicu Constantinescu, and was inaugurated in the presence of King Carol I and Prince Ferdinand; the building, of eclectic architecture, still serves today as the seat of the City Hall and the Local Council. The city is first documented in 1431, as a market town and customs point, in a deed issued by the ruler Dan al II-lea, and acquired the status of episcopal see around the year 1500, with the establishment of the Episcopate of Buzău during the reign of Radu cel Mare. This dual vocation — commercial and ecclesiastical — shaped the urban structure of the centre, which is marked by a high density of historic buildings from the 17th to the 20th centuries. Among the notable features of the central area are Casa Vergu-Mănăilă, the oldest secular building in the city, erected in the second half of the 18th century, the Vila și Parcul Marghiloman, a late 19th-century ensemble with a dendrological park, and Parcul Crâng, the largest park in the city, laid out as a public garden on the site of a former forest from the ancient Codrii ai Vlăsiei. Also located in the central area is the Buzău County Museum, with its collections of archaeology, art and ethnography. Buzău continues to function today as an important railway junction and as the seat of the county of the same name.
