The Saint John the Baptist Cathedral in Ploiești

The Saint John the Baptist Cathedral in Ploiești is situated on Bulevardul Republicii, in the city centre, and is the most imposing church in the city, dominating the area with its main tower rising to approximately 55–60 metres. On the site of the present cathedral there was originally a modest wooden church, built in 1810–1811, which was later replaced, in 1841–1842, by a brick church constructed with money collected from the inhabitants of the neighbourhood. During the interwar period, the idea emerged of erecting a monumental bell tower and, subsequently, a full cathedral, as a tribute to the Romanian heroes who fell in the First World War. Work on the memorial bell tower began on 18 November 1923, with the foundation stone laid by Crown Prince Carol, the future King Carol II, and construction was entrusted to the renowned Ploiești-born architect Toma T. Socolescu. The building was raised as a "Memorial to the Heroes of Prahova from the War of National Unification 1916–1918", and soldiers of the 32nd Mircea Regiment from Ploiești also took part in its construction. A particularly moving detail is that the materials used were brought from the sites of the battles themselves: stone blocks from Oituz, bricks from Mărășești, and gravel from Doaga and from the Valea Șușiței. Construction was completed on 10 May 1939. The cathedral impresses both through its monumental dimensions and through the richness of its interior decoration: the large icons are clad in silver gilt, the altar is crowned by a baldachin similar to those found in metropolitanates and bishoprics, and the iconostasis is carved, ornate, and coloured in shades of green and gold. The memorial bell tower is listed among the historical monuments of Prahova County. Through its architectural merit and its significance as a symbolic place of worship honouring the sacrifice of Prahova's heroes, the cathedral remains one of the most important landmarks of identity, history and faith in Ploiești.
