Potaissa Roman Legionary Fortress

The Roman fortress on Dealul Cetății in Turda was the base of Legio V Macedonica, brought to Potaissa around AD 168. The headquarters building, baths, gates, bastions and Roman roads have been restored and are visited from suspended walkways. The site is part of the UNESCO World Heritage property "Frontiers of the Roman Empire: Dacia" (2024).

The legionary fortress of Potaissa stands on the plateau called Dealul Cetății, in the western part of the city of Turda, Cluj County. The ancient town of Potaissa, whose name comes from an earlier Dacian settlement, lay at the foot of the hill, where Turda stands today. Around AD 168, during the Marcomannic Wars, Emperor Marcus Aurelius moved Legio V Macedonica from Troesmis (in Dobruja) to Potaissa to strengthen the defence of north-western Dacia. The legion stayed here until the Roman administration withdrew from Dacia under Aurelian. The fortress covers over 23 hectares (about 573 x 408 m), with a wall almost 2 km long, a trapezoidal bastion at each corner and a gate on each side. The civilian settlement became a municipium under Septimius Severus and later a colonia. Since 1971 the fortress has been studied in systematic excavation campaigns, long led by archaeologist Mihai Bărbulescu. Conservation works started in 2020, funded largely from European funds, restored the headquarters building (principia), the baths, the gates, the bastions and the Roman roads. The remains are seen from suspended walkways under a protective steel structure. After the works were handed over in July 2024, the fortress could only be visited by appointment, on guided tours or during cultural events; it officially opened to the general public on 11 September 2026, at the Porta Praetoria, 26 Castrului Roman Street. Finds from the site are displayed at the Turda History Museum, which offers a combined ticket with the fortress. The fortress is a listed historic monument (LMI CJ-I-s-A-07208), part of the Potaissa archaeological site (CJ-I-s-A-07210). Since 2024 it has been a component of the UNESCO serial World Heritage property "Frontiers of the Roman Empire: Dacia" (Turda, Potaissa / Dealul Cetății). The site is managed by the Turda History Museum. Did you know that, according to archaeologist Sorin Nemeti, only about one hectare of the fortress's more than 23 hectares has been uncovered so far? By his estimate, fully researching it could take another 250 years.
