Wesselényi Castle in Jibou

Wesselényi Castle is a historic monument complex located in the town of Jibou, Sălaj County, and is considered the largest Baroque castle in Transylvania. The estate came into the possession of the Hungarian noble Wesselényi family in 1584, when Prince Ștefan Báthory gifted it to treasurer Ferenc Wesselényi. The oldest building in the complex is the "curia", a modest noble residence that was entirely rebuilt in 1702 by Baron István Wesselényi and Countess Kata Bánffy. The castle itself, in its monumental form, was constructed between 1779 and 1796 (with work continuing until around 1810), based on plans drawn up by Czech architect Franz Wrabetz. The complex includes, in addition to the castle, a park, a curia, a manège, a greenhouse, a stable, a barn and a crypt — all listed as historical monuments. The interiors were once adorned with paintings by artist Franz Neuhauser, and the park was laid out in the English style, featuring a lake, an artesian fountain and greenhouses for a "winter garden", reflecting the Viennese-influenced art of gardening. Following the nationalisations after 1948, the castle lost much of its interior decoration and served a succession of purposes — a school, a boarding high school, a pioneer house, a museum and a young naturalists' station. It is precisely from this period that the estate's most significant living legacy dates: in 1968, at the initiative of biology teacher Vasile Fati, the castle's former park was transformed into the Botanical Garden that bears his name today. Covering approximately 24 hectares and home to over 5,000 plant species from around the world, the "Vasile Fati" Botanical Garden is the most visited tourist attraction in Sălaj County and includes greenhouses, an aquarium, an aviary and themed sections. The castle was returned to descendants of the family and subsequently changed hands several times; it is currently privately owned and subject to litigation, which is why the interior cannot be visited. The park and botanical garden surrounding it nonetheless remain open to the public and also offer the finest vantage point from which the castle can be admired.
