Dezna Castle

Dezna Castle is a medieval fortification situated on a hill in the village of Dezna, Arad County, at coordinates 46.4053987° N, 22.247706° E, at an altitude of approximately 400 m. The construction dates from the 14th century, with the first documentary mention recorded in 1318, when it belonged to the Hungarian noble family of Dezna. Over the centuries, the fortress served military and administrative functions within the western Transylvanian defence system, withstanding several sieges, including conflicts with the Ottoman Empire during the 16th and 17th centuries. The original structure included defensive towers, enclosure walls and an inner noble residence, of which partial ruins survive today, visible along the hilltop ridge. The geological area belongs to the Munții Codru-Moma, with predominantly Mesozoic rocks — limestone and crystalline schists. Access is from the centre of Dezna village via a marked path, covering approximately 1.5 km on foot to the ruins. Dezna is located approximately 65 km north-west of the city of Arad, along DJ792, reachable by private vehicle or by public transport to the village. Near the castle lies Lacul Dezna, a reservoir covering an area of approximately 70 ha. Dezna Castle is well worth a visit for its historical significance, documented since the 14th century, and for the panoramic views over the valley and the Munții Codru-Moma.
