Clocota Waterfall

Clocota Waterfall is a thermal waterfall situated on the edge of the Geoagiu-Băi balneoclimatic resort, in the Munții Metaliferi, Hunedoara County — an area renowned since Antiquity for its thermal springs, used by the Dacians and later developed by the Romans. The waterfall forms on the Clocota stream and impresses not through its size, but through the distinctive beauty of its stepped water cascades, its colours, and its exceptional setting. The height of the drop is approximately 40 metres, with a width of around 22 metres. What makes it unique is the thermal nature of its water: the Clocota stream collects water from 16 thermomineral springs in the area, so the waterfall never freezes and can be admired in any season. In winter, when temperatures drop, the warm vapour rising from the mesothermal waters envelops the waterfall in a magical atmosphere, while icicles form along its edges — a spectacular contrast. Clocota is one of the few mesothermal waterfalls in Romania, with the only comparable situation found at Toplița, in Harghita County. The waterfall was formed through the gradual collapse of the ground under the action of calcareous waters, with vegetation and soil gradually becoming embedded in travertine deposits over time, giving the waterfall's vertical folds a distinctive appearance covered in moss, with small pools and stepped formations at its base. Situated at the confluence of the mountain natural setting and the spa tradition of the Geoagiu-Băi resort, Clocota is one of the most picturesque and appreciated natural attractions in Hunedoara County, and is even illuminated in the evenings for visitors.
