Cascada Cailor

Cascada Cailor is one of the highest waterfalls in Romania, with a free fall of approximately 90 metres, situated in the Munții Rodnei range on the territory of the commune of Borșa in Maramureș County. The water originates from the Cailor stream, a tributary of the Vișeu, and plunges over a rocky face formed from crystalline schists, rocks characteristic of the geological bedrock of the Munții Rodnei. The area forms part of the Parcul Național Munții Rodnei, a protected area of international importance included in the Natura 2000 network. The altitude at the base of the waterfall is approximately 1,300 metres, while its top sits at around 1,390 metres. The flow rate varies considerably depending on the season, reaching its peak in spring during the snowmelt period. The surrounding vegetation is typical of the subalpine belt, with spruce forest and shrubs of bilberry and cowberry. Access is from the resort of Borșa, following the marked trail from Complexul Turistic Borșa, over a distance of approximately 4 kilometres, with a walking time of 1.5 to 2 hours. The elevation gain along the trail is around 400 metres. The trail is passable from May to October, depending on weather conditions. Cascada Cailor is well worth visiting for its remarkable physical scale within the context of the Eastern Carpathians and for the relatively accessible trail leading to it.
