Bâlea Waterfall
Bâlea Waterfall, also known as Urlătoarea Bâlei, is located in the Făgăraș Mountains, Sibiu County, within Cârțișoara commune, at about 1,230 m altitude, on the Bâlea River, with a drop of about 60 m over gneiss and mica schist rock. It is Romania's largest stepped waterfall. It offers a clear illustration of glacial and hydrographic shaping processes in the Southern Carpathians.

Bâlea Waterfall, also known as Urlătoarea Bâlei, is located in the Făgăraș Mountains, Sibiu County, within Cârțișoara commune, at an altitude of about 1,230 m, along the upper course of the Bâlea River. It is considered Romania's largest stepped waterfall. The drop measures about 60 m and forms as accumulated water from melting snow and precipitation on the massif's northern slope rushes down, fed also by water flowing from Lake Bâlea — a glacial lake at about 2,030-2,034 m altitude, which the Transfăgărășan road reaches at its highest point. Flow varies significantly by season, peaking in spring as high-altitude snow melts.
Geologically, the area is dominated by metamorphic rock — gneiss and mica schist — characteristic of the Făgăraș Mountains, formed by intense Precambrian tectonic activity and later shaped by Quaternary glaciation. The Bâlea glacial cirque, right nearby at higher altitude, directly illustrates the effects of these glacial shaping processes.
Bâlea Waterfall is worth visiting for its geomorphological value, offering a concrete example of glacial and hydrographic shaping in Romania's highest mountain massif, with the option to combine the visit with exploring the Transfăgărășan road and Lake Bâlea.
