Nicolae Iorga Memorial House Valenii de Munte

The Nicolae Iorga Memorial House in Valenii de Munte is the residence where the great Romanian historian, politician and academician Nicolae Iorga (1871–1940) lived and carried out a significant part of his intellectual work. The building is located in the centre of Valenii de Munte, Prahova County, at coordinates 45.186° N, 26.040° E, in a sub-Carpathian area at approximately 400 m altitude. Nicolae Iorga chose this town as his summer residence from the early decades of the 20th century, organising here, from 1908 onwards, the celebrated "Summer Universities" — cultural and academic gatherings that attracted intellectuals from across Romania and from the Romanian diaspora. The house was converted into a memorial museum following the death of the historian, who was assassinated in November 1940 by members of the legionary movement. The collections on display include original documents, correspondence, books from his personal library, period furniture and personal belongings of the scholar, providing a comprehensive picture of the life's work of a man who published over 1,000 volumes. Valenii de Munte is accessible via DN1A, from Ploiești (approximately 60 km) or from Cheia and Brașov. The museum is administered by local authorities and can be visited according to a specific schedule. It is well worth a visit for a firsthand account of Nicolae Iorga's contribution to Romanian culture and for an understanding of the context in which the Summer Universities took place — a unique cultural event of its era.
