Casa Babei Vrâncioaia

Casa Babei Vrâncioaia is a memorial museum built by the villagers of Bârsești on Dealul Dumbrava, the site where, according to legend, the elderly Tudora Vrâncioaia once lived. The museum preserves a traditional log house and objects typical of a Vrancean household from the medieval period, while also offering remarkable views over the Vrancea depression. The legend, first recorded in documentary form in the Geographical Dictionary of Putna County and popularised in its current form by folklore collector Simion Hârnea in 1926, tells that Ștefan cel Mare, exhausted after a defeat against the Turks in 1476, came to the door of Tudora Vrâncioaia in Dumbrava Bârseștilor seeking shelter without revealing his identity. Tudora recognised him by his clothing and appearance, waited for him to fall asleep, then went to her seven sons — Bodea, Spirea, Negrilă, Bârsan, Spulber, Pavel and Nistor — and sent them to gather the young men who were tending sheep on the highlands of Vrancea. When the ruler awoke, a small army stood ready in front of the house. With it, Ștefan defeated the Turks. As a reward, he granted each of the seven sons one of the mountains of Vrancea, confirmed by a charter written in golden letters on calfskin. The seven sons founded villages at the foot of their mountains, which still bear their names today: Bodești, Spirești, Negrilești, Bârsești, Spulber, Păulești and Nistorești. Historians note that no Vrancean document discovered to date explicitly mentions Ștefan cel Mare in connection with Vrancea, which leads scholars to regard the legend as a combination of historical memory and founding myth. Regardless of its historical authenticity, the legend of Vrâncioaia remains the origin myth of the Vrancean community and explains the administrative structure of the region. Next to the house stands the Monument to Ștefan cel Mare — an obelisk with a cross on a stone pedestal, inaugurated on 2 July 1904 on the 400th anniversary of the voivode's death.
