Câmpul Libertății Blaj

Câmpul Libertății is a historic site located in the municipality of Blaj, Alba county, covering an area of approximately 7 hectares. On 3/15 May 1848, it hosted the Great National Assembly of Romanians from Transilvania, the most significant event of the 1848 Revolution in the Romanian lands. Around 40,000 Romanians from all corners of Transilvania demanded the abolition of serfdom, the recognition of the Romanian nation as a nation in its own right, and equal rights with the other nations of the empire. Blaj played a central role in this event due to its status as the Greek-Catholic cultural and ecclesiastical centre of Transylvanian Romanians — the city was known as "Mica Romă" (Little Rome). The 1848 Assembly has remained in collective memory as a landmark moment of Romanian national consciousness. The field is lined with centuries-old trees and features a monument dedicated to the heroes of the 1848 revolution. Official commemorations are held annually on 3 May. It is well worth visiting for anyone wishing to understand the formation of modern Romanian national identity and the role Transilvania played in this process.
