Ion Creangă's Bojdeuca, Iași
Ion Creangă's Bojdeuca ("cottage") stands at 4 Strada Simion Bărnuțiu, in the Țicău district of Iași. It is a small house dated 1842, with an open porch and two rooms separated by a narrow entrance hall. Creangă moved here in 1872, after he was defrocked and had to leave his lodgings at Golia Monastery, and lived in the house until his death in 1889. He bought it for seven imperial gold coins and registered it in the name of Tinca Vartic, who lived here with him and his son Constantin. During his years at the Bojdeuca, Creangă wrote his tales and "Memories of My Boyhood" ("Amintiri din copilărie"), which he read at the Junimea literary society. Mihai Eminescu lived in the house for a time in 1876, before leaving for Bucharest in 1877 to work at the newspaper "Timpul". On 15 April 1918 the house became the "Ion Creangă" Memorial House Museum, the first memorial museum in Romania. The Bojdeuca is a historic monument (LMI code IS-IV-m-B-04328) and part of the National Museum of Romanian Literature Iași. After a restoration completed in 2023, the museum reopened on 15 December 2023; the works drew public criticism for failing to keep the simple, rural character of the house. The museum also has an annex building used for temporary exhibitions.
