Fortified Church of Dârlos
The Fortified Church of Dârlos is a Gothic hall-church from the first half of the 15th century, located in the village of Dârlos, Dârlos commune, Sibiu County, 4 km from Mediaș. It has a single nave, no tower, with interior and exterior murals from the early 16th century. The original fortification that once surrounded the church (enclosure wall, defense towers) has completely disappeared over time and can today only be inferred from the site's layout.

The Fortified Church of Dârlos is located in the village of Dârlos, Dârlos commune, Sibiu County, about 4 km from Mediaș, on the right bank of the Târnava Mare River. The village is documented since 29 March 1317, under the name "Possesio Darlaz," in a charter of King Charles Robert of Hungary.
The hall-church was built in the first half of the 15th century, in late Gothic style, with a single nave and a two-bay choir supported by buttresses — notably, the building has no tower, a rare feature among Saxon churches in Transylvania. Restoration work in 1975 uncovered murals in the choir's interior and facades, dating from the early 16th century, with ornamental bands and the figures of two saints. Large fragments of exterior mural painting survive on the choir's facades, depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ and Saint Christopher, dated before 1544 — a rare element in Transylvanian religious architecture. The Gothic window frames are richly decorated, and fragments of Roman funerary stelae are embedded in the walls.
Although in past centuries the church was surrounded by a fortified enclosure, with a defense wall and storage chambers — documented in a 19th-century engraving and still partly preserved in the early 20th century — this fortification has completely disappeared over time. Today its existence can only be inferred from the site's topography, with no walls or towers visible. The church is listed among Romania's historic monuments as of 2010, code LMI SB-II-a-A-12376.
Worth visiting for its authentic Gothic architecture and its rare murals, both interior and exterior, valuable evidence of 16th-century Saxon religious art in Transylvania — not for a visible fortified structure, which no longer exists today.
