Sebeș Evangelical Church

The Evangelical Church in Sebeș, located in the centre of the municipality of Sebeș, Alba County, is a historical monument of national importance whose architectural evolution spans approximately three centuries. Construction began in the mid-12th century with a three-nave Romanesque basilica, built by the Saxon community that had settled in the area. Throughout the 13th to 15th centuries, the church underwent successive transformations: the Romanesque apse was replaced with a Gothic one, the choir was rebuilt in the Gothic style and completed around 1392, and the side naves were widened and raised in height. The choir reaches a height of 23 m, with octagonal pillars of 11 m, decorated with Gothic ribbed vaulting and sculptures featuring plant motifs or mythological and biblical figures. The most valuable piece in the interior is the polyptych altar, erected between 1518 and 1526, standing 13 m tall and 6 m wide — the largest altar in Transilvania. In the 15th century, the church was surrounded by a defensive wall with battlements, transforming it into a fortified ensemble. From the first half of the 16th century, the monument has served as a place of worship for the Evangelical parish. It is well worth visiting for its Transylvanian Gothic architecture, the monumental altar, and the panoramic view over the city from the bell tower.
