St Paraskeva Wooden Church in Poienile Izei
The wooden church of St Paraskeva in Poienile Izei, dated by the List of Historic Monuments to 1700, is one of the eight wooden churches of Maramureș inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999. It keeps a rectangular altar apse typical of the seventeenth century and painting from 1794, with an extensive Last Judgement in the narthex. It is a listed historic monument, LMI code MM-II-m-A-04605.

The wooden church dedicated to St Paraskeva (Cuvioasa Paraschiva), also known as the church of Poienile Glodului, stands in the village of Poienile Izei, Poienile Izei commune, in historic Maramureș. The village is first documented in 1430, and a church in the village is recorded in 1604. The List of Historic Monuments dates the present building to 1700, while Wikipedia gives 1632. The church is distinct from Poienile Izei Monastery, which was built in recent decades.
The church has a rectangular plan, with a porch on the west side and a rectangular, recessed altar apse, a seventeenth-century type preserved in only a few wooden churches. In the first half of the eighteenth century the walls were raised and the roof was given a double skirt. The porch was added in the first half of the nineteenth century. The bell tower over the narthex has a projecting, open belfry with arcades on posts and a tall pyramidal roof, with a metal crescent beneath the cross.
The painting was made in 1793-1794, according to the inscription along the base of the nave vault, by an unsigned painter whom local tradition names as Gheorghe of Dragomirești. The proskomedia table was painted and signed by Radu Munteanu in 1785. The nave vault shows the Holy Trinity, and the walls show the Passion in 18 episodes, influenced by Western realism. The narthex is devoted almost entirely to the Last Judgement, which spreads across the west, south and north walls, with a detailed depiction of Hell.
During the restoration of 1962-1964 by the Directorate of Historic Monuments, the church's charter, later destroyed in a laboratory, and an antimension, now kept at the Eparchial Museum in Cluj, were found in the base of the altar table. The church was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in December 1999 as part of the "Wooden Churches of Maramureș" and is listed as a historic monument under code MM-II-m-A-04605.
