Museikon - Museum of Religious Art Alba Iulia
Museikon is a unique museum in Romania, dedicated to icons and old books, housed in a restored historic monument building in the heart of the Alba Carolina Citadel. The result of a Romanian-Norwegian cultural partnership, the museum brings together exceptional collections of religious art from the heritage of the Orthodox Archbishopric of Alba Iulia and the National Museum of the Union.

Museikon is one of the most original museums in Romania, dedicated to icons and old books, and represents a story of rescuing and showcasing an exceptional cultural heritage. The project was established in 2014 through the joint efforts of the Alba County Council, the National Museum of the Union, the Orthodox Archbishopric of Alba Iulia, and the University Museum of Bergen, Norway. The museum occupies a carefully restored historic monument building located within the Alba Carolina Citadel — one of the best-preserved Vauban-style fortresses in Europe. The structure, formerly an Austrian military hospital, has been transformed into a modern museum featuring eight permanent exhibition halls on the ground and upper floors, two spaces for temporary exhibitions, and restoration laboratories. The Museikon collections include icons painted on wood and glass, manuscripts and old books of inestimable value, liturgical objects, and pieces of religious goldsmithery. Each exhibit tells a story about faith, artistic craftsmanship, and the spirituality of Romanian communities in Transylvania across the centuries. Modern lighting and exhibition design showcase each piece with subtlety and elegance. Museikon is part of the National Museum of the Union complex and can be visited as part of the same cultural circuit in Alba Iulia.
